Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
What Is TMS?
TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, is an FDA-approved treatment for both OCD and Treatment-Resistant Depression that uses gentle magnetic waves to stimulate neural activity, thus alleviating symptoms of depression/OCD.
Mechanism of Action
Rather than modulating the chemical levels in your brain like most antidepressants, TMS goes straight to the source and targets the regions of the brain that are underactive during a depressive episode, and gets them jump-started.
Why Should I Consider TMS?
1
Clinical trials show that TMS is markedly more effective than your typical treatments for depression, such as antidepressant therapy. While estimates on exact efficacy rates vary, generally, TMS is around 2-3 times more effective in treating depression when compared to regular antidepressant therapy!
High Rate of Efficacy
TMS is very non-invasive with a side-effect profile that is much smaller than your typical antidepressants including things like scalp sensitivity and small headaches.
Noninvasive
Covered by Most major Insurances
TMS is also covered by most major health insurance providers, but don’t worry! Here at Joyful Horizon, we handle everything from gathering your benefits to getting TMS approved through your insurance, so you can sit back and rest assured that you are in the best hands possible.
Data concerning TMS efficacy taken from Dalhuisen et al., 2024, and antidepressant data gleaned from the STAR*D Project (Warden at al., 2007).
